How Should Shower Plumbing Be Connected Behind the Wall?
Shower supply lines are usually joined one of four ways: cold expansion, copper crimp ring, stainless clamp, or push-to-connect. Cold expansion keeps very close to the full bore of the pipe; the other three use a barbed insert that narrows it. The joint, not the pipe, is where plumbing normally fails.
Ask any plumber where a wall leaks. It is not the middle of a run. It is a connection. So the question worth asking your remodeler is not just what pipe do you use, but how do you join it.
What is cold expansion?
Cold expansion is covered by ASTM F1960 and works only with PEX-A, because it depends on the pipe’s shape memory. The pipe and a reinforcing ring are expanded with a tool, the fitting is inserted, and the pipe shrinks back down onto it. The joint keeps tightening for minutes after the installer moves on.
Two things follow from that. The bore stays close to full, so the joint restricts flow very little. And it cannot be dry-fitted — once it is made, it is made.
How do crimp and clamp connections differ?
Crimp (ASTM F1807) uses a barbed insert fitting sealed with a copper ring. Clamp, sometimes called cinch (ASTM F2098), uses the same style of barbed insert sealed with a stainless steel ear clamp. Both work on PEX-A, B and C, and both are the lowest cost per joint.
The trade-off is the insert. It sits inside the waterway and necks the pipe down at every connection. Crimp joints also need a go/no-go gauge checked on every single joint, which is a step that is easy to skip when nobody is watching.
Does the restriction actually matter?
On one joint, barely. On a long trunk run with many joints, the restrictions add up, and a shower is exactly that kind of run. Expansion fittings protect pressure that barbed joints quietly throttle.
What about push-to-connect fittings?
No tool at all. You push the pipe in, an internal ring of teeth bites it, and an O-ring makes the seal. They are genuinely useful for a repair under a sink.
Permanently, behind a finished wall, is a different question. Here is what PHCP Pros, the plumbing trade journal, says about them: “Freeze tests and pull tests show these PEX connections are more susceptible to failure; because PEX is more malleable than metal, the fitting’s teeth can slide off the pipe.”
There is a second consideration. An O-ring is a rubber part. It is the one component in that list with a service life.
Why would anyone choose the cheaper joint?
Cost and flexibility, both ways. Crimp and clamp tooling is inexpensive and works across every grade of PEX, so a crew can buy whichever pipe is cheapest that week. Push-fit needs no tool at all, which makes it fast.
Cold expansion locks you into the more expensive pipe and a dedicated tool. We made that trade on purpose.

What to ask before the wall closes
Ask which joining method is being used and why. Ask whether the joints can be seen and tested before anything is covered. A leak found on rough-in day is a short fix; the same leak found after the wall is finished is a demolition.
